The “IPv6 Business Summit 2004” was held at the Keio Plaza Hotel (Shinjuku, Tokyo) on February 16 with the theme of “Opening the Door to the Ubiquitous Society.” NTT Communications gave a public demonstration of joint demonstrative experiments being implemented with 11 other corporations including a home appliance manufacturer, an office appliance manufacturer, and a telecommunication device manufacturer at the exhibit site.

For the creation of IPv6 business, we consider it important to provide an environment in which the customers can actually use the benefit of IPv6 where “objects can communicate end-to-end with one another safely, simply and in real time,” not to mention the establishment of an IPv6 network. As one specific example of this, NTT Communications developed the “networked home appliance connection management method (m2m-x)” which safely and simply addresses bidirectional real-time communication between networked home appliances within the home network and a mobile phone, PC, or other networked appliances at a remote location via the Internet, and started demonstrative experiments jointly with the home appliance manufacturers, etc. who have adopted it. Various demonstrations were given using “m2m-x” at the exhibit site.

Personal VPN (Virtual Private Network) By making a VPN connection to the broadband router, etc. at home from a PC at a remote location, it is possible to transmit/receive files from/to the server within the home network, program DVD recording, or view the network camera at home. Since “m2m-x” is used, there is no need to create special settings for the PC or the broadband router. In addition, the Ethernet environment of the home network is provided with a PC at a remote location without any change, eliminating the need to add functions or set up the existing networked home appliances and allowing simple use from a remote location without such operations. It is one example of “m2m-x” application.

They demonstrate that it is possible to make a real time connection to a network camera, etc. at home from a mobile terminal or PC at a remote location simply and safely via the home security gateway supporting “m2m-x.” The home security gateway is equipped with an IPv6/IPv4 translator function and IPsec function, and enables simple and safe connection using “m2m-x” from a remote location on existing networked home appliances supporting IPv4 or network devices not supporting IPsec by connecting to them as the “mother unit.”

A Firewall control function in interlock with “m2m-x” is mounted on Yamaha’s IPv6-supporting broadband router for offices with “RTX1000.” Packet filter rules are controlled in real time according to the request from the terminal supporting “m2m-x.” This enables safe communication with the server, office devices, etc. in offices from a terminal at a remote location while shutting off unauthorized accesses.

Printing in Ubiquitous Environment Using Mobile Phone and Digital Copier It is possible to print out the electronic documents stored in an office or at home which are protected by a Firewall simply and safely at the digital color copier at hand by specifying the document from a mobile phone, etc. at a remote location with the security technique in “m2m-x” and mobile printing technique of Richo. It is now possible to extract material which cannot be read on the small liquid crystal screen of a mobile phone without carrying around a PC.
